Seven African referees earn historic FIFA World Cup 2026 appointments
African officiating has secured a notable breakthrough, with seven referees from across the continent selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup—an endorsement of their individual quality and the growing respect for match officials from Africa on the global stage.
Leading the group is Somalia’s Omar Abdulkadir Artan, whose composed style and sharp decision-making have earned him increasing recognition in continental competitions. His steady ascent has placed him among the most promising referees to emerge from the Horn of Africa.
Algeria’s Mustapha Ghorbal brings extensive experience to the lineup. A familiar figure in both CAF and international competitions, his selection reflects a long-standing record of consistent and high-level performances.
Egypt’s Amin Mohamed continues North Africa’s strong refereeing presence, reinforcing a tradition built on discipline, precision, and tactical awareness.
South Africa’s Abongile Tom represents the continent’s new wave of officials making their mark on the global stage. His growing reputation stems from solid displays in both domestic and continental fixtures.
From Central Africa, Gabon’s Pierre Atcho adds experience and authority, attributes that have earned him respect in CAF competitions and beyond.
Mauritania’s Dahane Beida also makes the list, marking a significant step forward for a nation increasingly establishing itself in elite refereeing circles.
Completing the lineup is Morocco’s Jalal Jayed, whose inclusion further highlights North Africa’s strong footprint in the game’s officiating ranks.
Together, the seven will carry Africa’s hopes at football’s most prestigious tournament, tasked with upholding the integrity of the game on the world stage.
The selections also point to a broader shift, with African referees steadily gaining credibility and influence in global football.
Elsewhere, FIFA has omitted several notable officials from its tournament list, including Ghana’s Daniel Nii Laryea, Senegal’s Issa Sy, and Jean-Jacques Ndala, who officiated the recent Africa Cup of Nations final.
The 2026 World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
