Senegalese football has found a new hero in Ibrahim Mbaye, the 18-year-old Paris Saint-Germain winger who has quickly captured the hearts of fans across the country.

Following Senegal’s friendly against Peru, coach Pape Thiaw described him as “a phenomenon,” praise echoed by supporters from Dakar to the farthest corners of the country.

On the bustling streets of Dakar, two-starred Senegal jerseys line the roadside, celebrating the nation’s Africa Cup of Nations victories.

Traditionally, names like Sadio Mané and Kalidou Koulibaly dominate the scene. Yet, Mbaye’s rise is immediately noticeable.

“Sadio Mané is number one, Koulibaly second… and now Ibrahim Mbaye third,” says Moussa, a local vendor, as the young player’s name continues to appear on jerseys and conversation alike.

At the Dakar Sacré-Cœur academy, the city’s footballers, young and old, are inspired by Mbaye’s achievements. Ibrahima, watching amateur matches, remarks on the enthusiasm surrounding the national team, while 34-year-old Oumar, a Barcelona supporter, declares, “Ibrahim Mbaye, he’s the future.”

The winger’s influence is prompting even fans of other clubs to follow PSG more closely, captivated by his dedication and performances.

Mbaye’s rise has not been sudden but built on talent, discipline, and patriotism. Adama, a fan, highlights, “What I like most about him? His patriotism. In the sense that he gives everything on the pitch.”

The Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco marked a milestone, making Mbaye the youngest Senegalese player to participate in the tournament at just 17 years and 10 months.

The winger’s international choice also resonates deeply with supporters. Born to a Senegalese father and a Moroccan mother, Mbaye opted to represent Senegal.

“When the choice comes from the player, everything is simpler. It was a choice of the heart,” explained Thiaw in December 2025.

This decision has only strengthened his bond with fans, who see him as embodying the qualities of humility, hard work, and national pride.

With the 2026 World Cup approaching, where Senegal will face France in the group stage, all eyes are on Mbaye.

Having already lived his “childhood dream” at the AFCON, the winger now carries the hopes of a generation, poised to inspire future stars and potentially bring more glory to the Lions of Teranga.
