Senegal’s Dion Lopy rebuked by Almería coach after fiery substitution reaction against Eibar

Almería coach Rubi sharply reprimanded Senegalese midfielder Dion Lopy after his angry reaction to being substituted during Saturday’s 3-1 win over Eibar in LaLiga 2.

The manager addressed the issue publicly, stressing discipline and respect for team decisions while explaining that the change aimed to protect the player.

Lopy, who has been one of Almería’s standout performers over the past two seasons, showed visible frustration after being withdrawn in the 61st minute.

He ignored his coach’s extended hand and walked straight to the bench, clearly agitated by the decision.

Rubi substituted the Senegalese midfielder for Gui Guedes after Lopy received a first-half yellow card, fearing a possible second booking on a slippery pitch.

Rubi later commented firmly on the incident, saying: “Neither I, nor you, nor anyone else appreciated this gesture.

When a coach makes a decision, it must be respected. He lost his temper, made a mistake, and we’ll handle it internally.

There’s no need to make a big issue out of it.”

The Catalan coach explained that his decision came from caution, not punishment.

“We could have taken him off at halftime, but at 3-0, we thought it best to manage his situation carefully.

He usually handles himself well with one yellow card and hasn’t been sent off for a double booking before, but today, the risk seemed higher,” Rubi said.

Lopy, 34, has gained a reputation in Spain’s second division for his aggressive style.

Despite his importance to Almería’s midfield, his combative nature often draws disciplinary trouble.

In 47 league appearances, he has collected 24 yellow cards and one red, including his dismissal earlier this season against Racing Santander.

Rubi acknowledged Lopy’s passionate playing style, saying: “He plays with intensity and heart, and we appreciate that.

But he must control his emotions for the good of the team.”

The coach’s intervention underscores the balance between passion and discipline that defines Almería’s campaign.

While Lopy’s commitment remains unquestioned, Rubi’s message was clear — professionalism must come first.
