Aliou Cissé, the head coach of the Senegal national team, expressed profound sadness after his team’s defeat against Ivory Coast, resulting in their elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Senegal bid farewell to the Africa Cup of Nations in the round of 16 after losing to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a penalty shootout, with a final score of 5-4.
The match had ended in a 1-1 draw after regular and extra time.
In his post-match statements, Cissé said, “I feel a great disappointment for the players and my people because we came here to win this tournament.
There were some details about the match, but I won’t dwell on them,” adding, “In victory or defeat, you must continue to support your team, and I am proud of the players.”
Regarding his future with Senegal, he stated, “There will be a meeting with the Senegalese Football Federation, but currently, my future doesn’t matter.”
Aliou Cissé has been coaching the Senegal national team since 2015, leading them to a silver medal in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and securing the championship in 2021 against Egypt.
He also guided the team to the round of 16 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they were eliminated by England.
