Cheikhou Kouyaté, the experienced midfielder of the Senegal national team, remains resolute in his determination to extend his international career, brushing off suggestions from some quarters that he should retire.
In an interview with the APS, Kouyaté, who plays for Nottingham Forest, expressed his ambition to continue representing his country on the football field.
Despite uncertainties about how many years he has left in his career, Kouyaté is eager to make the most of the time he has, emphasizing his desire to enjoy the game.
“I don’t know how many years I have left. Only God knows. But for now, if I can squeeze in a few more years, time to have fun, so much the better,” Kouyaté stated.
The midfielder, who has been a stalwart for the Lions of Teranga since 2012, remains optimistic about his future in international football.
He believes that the decision to retire from the national team ultimately lies in the hands of a higher power.
Despite facing calls from some quarters to retire, Kouyaté remains undeterred, asserting his confidence in his abilities.
He insists that any discussion about his retirement should take place among those with a deep understanding of the game.
Kouyaté, who has represented Senegal in two World Cups and four African Nations Cups, played a crucial role in the team’s historic victory in the 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon, where Senegal clinched its first continental trophy.
Acknowledging the emergence of talented young players in the national team, Kouyaté encourages them to work hard and seize the opportunities presented to them.
He commends their talent and respectful attitude, emphasizing the importance of dedication and perseverance.
As for his own future beyond his playing career, Kouyaté believes it is premature to discuss retirement plans.
For now, his focus remains on contributing to the success of the Senegal national team, a cause he holds dear to his heart.
