Senegal’s Bouna Sarr nears emotional return to FC Metz after 16 months out

Bouna Sarr looks set to revive his career at FC Metz, the club where his professional journey first began.

The Senegalese international is currently training with the Ligue 2 side, aiming to secure a contract after spending 16 months without a team.

According to L’Équipe, the 33-year-old former Bayern Munich and Olympique de Marseille player joined Metz’s training sessions this week. He remains hopeful of convincing the coaching staff that he is ready to return to competitive football.

Sarr, a free agent since his contract with Bayern expired in June 2024, is currently staying at the La Citadelle Hotel in Metz.

He is expected to take part in Metz’s preseason training on Tuesday afternoon as the club assesses his physical condition and motivation.

For the right-back, the opportunity carries deep emotional significance. Metz was the club that gave him his professional debut in 2009, and he went on to make 110 appearances for the Garnets before leaving for Marseille in 2015.

The Lorraine club has a tradition of welcoming back familiar faces, having previously re-signed players like Gauthier Hein, Boubacar Traoré, and Habib Diallo. Sarr could now join that list if he proves he can still perform at the top level.

After successful spells in Ligue 1 and a stint with Bayern Munich, where he won several titles despite limited appearances, Sarr’s career has been stalled by injuries and inactivity.

His return to Metz would symbolize a fresh start both for him and the club, which continues to rebuild its squad with experience and leadership.

For Metz supporters, the potential signing evokes nostalgia and hope — a reunion with one of their own.

For Sarr, it represents the chance to reignite a once-promising career and restore his rhythm after a long absence from the pitch.
