Youssouf Sabaly has officially completed his transfer from Real Betis to Qatari side Al-Duhail SC, bringing to an end a four-year chapter with the Spanish club marked by reliability and silverware.
The Senegalese right-back’s departure was confirmed by Real Betis on Thursday, drawing the curtain on a tenure that began in 2021.
Sabaly, 31, made 91 appearances across all competitions for the Andalusian side, contributing two goals and seven assists during his time in green and white.
His consistent performances helped Betis maintain a competitive edge in both domestic and European campaigns, with his standout moment arriving in 2022 when he played a role in the team’s triumphant Copa del Rey run — the club’s first major trophy in 17 years.
“Real Betis thanks Youssouf Sabaly for his service and wishes him the best of luck in the next stage of his professional career,” the club said in a statement following the announcement of the transfer.
Sabaly, who previously played for Bordeaux and Paris Saint-Germain, brought experience and discipline to Betis’s backline.
His defensive awareness and versatility were key traits during a period of stability under manager Manuel Pellegrini, especially as the club juggled domestic fixtures with European competition.
His next destination, Al-Duhail SC, represents a fresh challenge in the Middle East.
The Qatari club, one of the dominant forces in the Qatar Stars League, will benefit from the presence of a seasoned international defender with over 20 caps for Senegal.
Sabaly’s move comes at a time when a growing number of African and European players are choosing the Qatari and broader Gulf leagues, drawn by competitive football, infrastructure development, and the promise of new experiences.
While Betis will look to reinforce their squad ahead of the upcoming La Liga season, Sabaly departs with the respect of teammates, staff, and fans alike — remembered for his calm presence on the pitch and professionalism off it.
His time in Seville may be over, but Youssouf Sabaly leaves behind a legacy built on reliability and dedication, with his Copa del Rey medal serving as a lasting reminder of his contribution to Real Betis’s recent history.
