Cheikhou Kouyaté remains without a club following his departure from Nottingham Forest in 2024, but the veteran Senegalese midfielder is not ready to call time on his career just yet.
At 35, Kouyaté has faced setbacks in his search for a new team, with medical concerns briefly stalling potential opportunities.
However, he remains confident that he will secure one final challenge before considering retirement.
Kouyaté recently revealed that his move to an undisclosed club fell through after a medical examination raised concerns about his physical condition.
Speaking on TFM, he recounted the experience: “I was informed on a Friday that I was injured during the medical. I immediately contacted a very competent doctor in England for a second opinion.”
The former West Ham and Crystal Palace player underwent further tests a few days later, which showed no issues.
Despite this, the club ultimately chose another player.
“There were two of us who took the medical tests, including Papy Djilobodji. I took the tests again on Tuesday, and this time, everything was fine. But in the end, I was told that the other player had been accepted. I gave thanks to God.”
Despite this disappointment, Kouyaté remains determined to stay in shape as he waits for the right opportunity.
“I’m fine, I’m with my family, and I’m continuing to work. I hope to find a club where I’ll have peace of mind. I don’t want to join a club just to get back on track. Respect has to be earned.”
The midfielder, who has amassed over 100 caps for Senegal, remains a highly experienced figure and believes he still has something to offer at the top level.
While the setback was frustrating, he remains patient in his search for a club that aligns with his values and ambitions.
For now, Kouyaté continues his personal training regimen, staying ready for when the right opportunity arises.
His career, spanning over a decade in European football, has seen him become a key figure for both club and country.
While time may not be on his side, the midfielder is determined to ensure that his next move is the right one, as he aims to finish his career on his own terms.
