Bouna Sarr’s potential return to FC Metz remains uncertain despite his recent presence around the club, according to head coach Stéphane Le Mignan.

The Senegalese international full-back, now 33, has trained with his boyhood club for several weeks, yet no immediate plans point toward an official contract.

Le Mignan addressed the situation during a press conference on Friday, offering a clear and measured assessment of Sarr’s status.

Speaking to the media, and quoted by Le Républicain Lorrain, the coach explained that Sarr does not currently train with the first-team group.

“He is not training with us at the moment,” Le Mignan said, before outlining the short-term plan for the experienced defender.

The Metz coach confirmed that Sarr will rejoin collective training at the start of next week. He welcomed the player’s desire to stay fit and involved, describing that attitude as positive. However, Le Mignan also stressed that availability and motivation alone do not guarantee a place in the squad.

“But he will come back with the group on Monday. He wants to continue training, and that is a good thing,” Le Mignan explained.

The coach then highlighted the main obstacle standing in the way of a formal return. FC Metz currently has several players competing in Sarr’s position, creating congestion on that side of the pitch. Le Mignan made it clear that this reality complicates any immediate reintegration into the squad.

“We spoke with him very clearly,” he added. “There are many players in his position right now, and it becomes difficult for him to find space. For now, the situation stays as it is.”

Sarr has remained around the club since early November, fueling speculation about a possible winter signing. His history with Metz and his experience at the highest level continue to attract attention from supporters, who remember his early development at the club before his later moves abroad.

Despite that emotional connection, Le Mignan continues to focus on balance within the squad. He suggested that any change in Sarr’s situation would likely depend on movement within the team. A departure in the full-back positions could reopen discussions and alter the current stance.

Until then, FC Metz will maintain its cautious approach. Sarr will continue to train, stay match-ready, and wait for clarity as the winter transfer window progresses. The club, meanwhile, prioritises squad stability and competition, even when sentiment points toward a reunion.

For now, Bouna Sarr’s return to official competition with FC Metz remains a possibility rather than a certainty
