Issa Soumaré has been praised for his “collective spirit” by Didier Digard after scoring twice in Le Havre AC’s 2-1 victory over Toulouse FC.
The Senegalese forward, who also found the net the previous week against RC Strasbourg Alsace, has played a decisive role in securing back-to-back wins for his side.
His recent goals ended a lengthy scoring drought and have proved crucial in lifting the team’s fortunes.
Despite the attention surrounding Soumaré’s return to form, Digard insisted his assessment of the player goes beyond statistics.
When asked whether the striker appeared “liberated” by his recent goals, the Le Havre coach rejected the idea of a sudden transformation.
“I didn’t really feel he was liberated. His strength lies in his consistency through good times and bad, and in his commitment to training ,” he said at a press conference.
Digard instead highlighted Soumaré’s work ethic and mentality, describing him as a player who prioritises the team above all else.
“He plays wherever I tell him to,” Digard explained, underlining the forward’s adaptability.
“He doesn’t ask questions, he only wants what’s best for the team. He knows that if I ask him to do something, I’ll do it for the team. His strength is putting the collective first. The players really appreciate this mindset, so they’re always supportive of him.”
The remarks point to a broader contribution than goals alone.
Soumaré’s willingness to accept different roles and his steady approach in training have earned him respect within the squad.
While his brace against Toulouse ensured immediate impact on the pitch, Digard’s comments suggest the forward’s influence extends well beyond matchday moments, reflecting a character valued as highly as his recent scoring form.
