Senegalese defender Joseph Layousse Samb shines again as Stade Lavallois earn crucial win at Bastia
Joseph Layousse Samb delivered another decisive performance for Stade Lavallois as the Senegalese defender scored his second goal for the club in a crucial 2–0 victory over Bastia in their rescheduled Ligue 2 fixture on Tuesday.
The match, originally set for the 11th round of the campaign, saw Laval assert control against a struggling Bastia side at the Stade Armand-Cesari.
Olivier Frapolli’s men approached the contest with urgency, knowing the result could prove pivotal in their battle to avoid relegation, and their intensity was rewarded before half-time.
Samb broke the deadlock in the 39th minute, reacting sharply after Bastia goalkeeper Johnny Placide parried a strike from Maggiotti.
The left-back followed up the rebound with composure, steering the ball into the net to give Laval a deserved lead and mark his second goal since joining the club from Teungueth FC.
His contribution highlighted the speed of his adaptation to French football, having already established himself as a reliable figure in Frapolli’s defensive set-up.
Laval strengthened their advantage shortly after the interval. In the 58th minute, Tchokounté stepped up with confidence to convert a penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and putting the visitors firmly in control.
The two-goal cushion allowed the team to manage the match with greater assurance, limiting Bastia’s opportunities as the hosts struggled to threaten meaningfully.
The victory delivered a much-needed boost for Laval, who have been fighting to climb out of the relegation pressure zone.
The three points lift them to 14th place on 15 points — a tally shared by Amiens, Boulogne, and Nancy — tightening the standings and injecting renewed hope into their survival campaign.
Frapolli’s side, who had endured inconsistent form in recent weeks, now find themselves with momentum at a critical stage of the season.

For Bastia, however, the defeat deepens an already worrying crisis.
The Corsican club remains rooted to the bottom of the table and now sits eight points behind Laval following their latest setback.
Their struggles, compounded by a lack of defensive solidity and attacking sharpness, leave the team facing an uphill challenge to escape the relegation zone as the season approaches its midpoint.
Samb’s decisive contribution, coupled with Laval’s disciplined collective display, ensured a well-earned victory on Corsican soil.
As the team looks ahead to the coming fixtures, the performance offers renewed belief that they can steer themselves out of danger and consolidate their position in Ligue 2.
