Senegalese defender Antoine Mendy suffers major injury blow at Nice

OGC Nice defender Antoine Mendy is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The 22-year-old, who came through Nice’s academy system, sustained the injury during Friday’s 1-1 Ligue 1 draw against newly promoted Le Mans.

Medical examinations on Sunday confirmed the extent of the injury, dealing a significant blow to both the player and Nice as they continue their search for a first league win of the season.

‘This is heartbreaking news for Antoine’

Nice confirmed the injury in a club statement after fears surrounding Mendy’s condition were confirmed by medical staff.

“This is heartbreaking news for Antoine, who grew up at Nice. He progressed through all the stages there before realising his dream of wearing the red and black jersey with the pros“, OGC Nice said in their statement.

Mendy’s injury comes at a particularly difficult time for the defender, who had established himself as an important member of the first team.

Key player sidelined

The young centre-back was a regular starter for Les Aiglons last season, making 40 appearances in all competitions.

His absence is another major setback for coach Olivier Pantaloni, whose squad had already suffered an ACL injury to midfielder Laurent Abergel during pre-season.

Nice and Le Mans remain without a victory this season following their draw, in which Elye Wahi cancelled out Adil Bourabaa’s early opening goal.
