Senegal World Cup ticket payment probe launched over alleged $86,000 shortfall

Senegal’s Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) has opened an investigation into an alleged unpaid $86,000 linked to ticket sales for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after a supporters’ group claimed it received only a fraction of the money it was owed.

The group alleges that a total payment of around $103,000 was due, but only $17,000 has been received, leaving an outstanding balance of approximately $86,000.

As part of the investigation, Iyane Thiam has been questioned by investigators, while Madou Diène, the chief executive of Elite Sports, has also been named in the case.

Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged payment shortfall as Senegalese fans prepare for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where the Lions of Teranga qualified for the tournament under head coach Pape Thiaw.

The investigation comes amid heightened interest in World Cup ticket distribution for Senegalese supporters, with authorities previously announcing special ticket allocations for fans living abroad during the tournament.

No charges have been announced, and the DIC has not identified anyone as being responsible while its inquiries continue.

Meanwhile, Senegal suffered a Round of 32 elimination under Pape Thiaw as head coach. The uninspiring performance of the Teranga Lions led to the dismissal of Thiaw. 

However, the Senegalese FA has announced France and Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira as the new head coach.
