Senegal U20s secure victory over Mali in AFCON U20 qualifiers opener
Senegal’s U20 team opened their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) U20 qualifying campaign in commanding fashion with a 2-0 victory over Mali. The match, held on Monday as part of Group B’s first round, saw the Senegalese side take early control under the guidance of coach Serigne Saliou Dia.
The young Senegalese squad set the pace from the outset, dominating the first half with a confident display.
Their pressure paid off in the 27th minute when Serigne Fallou Diouf broke the deadlock.
Diouf headed home from a well-executed free-kick delivered by Ibrahima Diallo, giving Senegal the lead they carried into the halftime break.
Mali, determined to stage a comeback, upped their efforts in the second half.
Despite their more aggressive approach, they were unable to penetrate the resolute Senegalese defense.
Senegal extended their advantage in the 53rd minute through another set piece.
Substitute Abdourahmane Dia, who had recently entered the match, capitalized on the opportunity to secure the second goal, effectively sealing the win for Senegal.
With this victory, Senegal now sits atop Group B, positioning themselves favorably for a spot in the semi-finals.
Their next fixture is against Gambia on Thursday, September 19, in what promises to be an intense West African derby.
A win in this encounter would assure the Lionceaux of a place in the last four, cementing their status as strong contenders in the tournament.
Mali, on the other hand, struggled to find their rhythm throughout the match.
The Aiglons appeared out of sorts and were largely overpowered by the Senegalese side.
With Mauritania’s withdrawal from the tournament giving them a bye on the second day, Mali’s focus now shifts to a crucial encounter against Gambia on Sunday, September 22.
They will need a win to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.
This challenging start leaves Mali with an uphill battle as they aim to regain form and secure their place in the tournament.
Senegal, meanwhile, will look to build on their strong start and continue their march toward AFCON U20 2025 glory.
