Senegal U17 forward Mouhamed Wagne suffers injury blow, ruled out of AFCON qualifiers

Senegal’s U17 team suffered a major setback at the ongoing UFOA A qualifying tournament after talented forward Mouhamed Wagne sustained a serious injury that ruled him out of the remainder of the competition.

Wagne started the crucial group-stage match against Sierra Leone but left the pitch after only 25 minutes following a heavy challenge.

Medical staff rushed to assist him, but the extent of the injury meant his tournament ended prematurely.

Yaya Baldé, head of the Senegalese Football Federation delegation and a member of the executive committee, confirmed that immediate medical care was provided.

“We delivered first aid on the field, and medical staff immobilized the fractured part properly,” Baldé explained.

The 17-year-old, who plays for Diambars de Saly, returned to Senegal shortly after the incident and will undergo surgery as part of his treatment plan.

The federation assured that it will provide full support throughout his recovery.

Baldé highlighted the unity around the young player, noting that he continues to receive strong encouragement from teammates, technical staff, administrative officials, and the wider Senegalese football community. “We all wish him a quick and full recovery,” he added.

Wagne’s injury represents a significant loss for Senegal, as he had been expected to play a key role in their push for qualification for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite his absence, the team remains determined to continue its campaign and secure a place in the continental showpiece.

The tournament continues to showcase Africa’s best emerging talents, and Senegal will now rely on its squad depth to compensate for the loss of one of its brightest young stars.
