KAA Gent defender Noah Fadiga will have a defibrillator implanted to safeguard his health following a heart attack suffered during a recent match.

This medical intervention ensures the 24-year-old Senegalese international can continue his football career despite being diagnosed with myocarditis, a condition linked to prior viral infection.

The incident occurred last Sunday during Gent’s match against Standard Liège.

Fadiga collapsed following a challenge with Alexandro Calut, sparking immediate concern from teammates, fans, and coach Wouter Vrancken.

Though he was able to leave the pitch unaided, further medical evaluations revealed the underlying issue.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Doctors identified myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle caused by a previous viral infection.

The condition led to the formation of scar tissue, which triggered an arrhythmia during the match.

To mitigate future risks, the club announced that Fadiga will undergo a procedure to have a defibrillator fitted.

Gent sought to reassure supporters about the player’s future. “This procedure does not compromise his career,” the club confirmed, adding that the device will enable him to safely continue competing at the highest level.

Fadiga will now be under the supervision of renowned cardiologist Pedro Brugada, who will closely monitor his condition to ensure his wellbeing on and off the pitch.

A Career of Resilience

Fadiga’s football journey has been marked by determination and resilience. After departing Stade Brestois for Gent in 2023 following an earlier cardiac issue, he had been enjoying a strong season in Belgium.

The Bruges-born defender made 23 appearances and scored four goals before this latest setback.

Despite the challenges posed by his condition, Fadiga’s commitment to the game remains unwavering.

The decision to fit the defibrillator highlights advancements in sports medicine that allow athletes to continue pursuing their careers while prioritizing health and safety.

Looking Ahead

This development marks a pivotal moment for Fadiga, both personally and professionally. His ability to return to the pitch following such a scare serves as an inspiration to many.

With Gent’s support and medical advancements on his side, Fadiga’s story is one of perseverance and hope in the face of adversity.

As he prepares to rejoin his teammates, the football world will undoubtedly rally behind him, celebrating his courage and determination to overcome this obstacle.
