Frustration for Senegal as Tunisia Snatch Late Victory in Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Senegal suffered a devastating loss to Tunisia in the final moments of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Tuesday. With the score tied at 0-0 heading into added time, Tunisia’s Ferjani Sassi scored a dramatic goal in the 90th+4 minute to seal a 1-0 victory, leaving the Lions of Teranga stunned and frustrated.
Senegal had been hopeful of securing at least a draw, which would have kept them in a strong position in Group A. However, the late strike dashed their hopes and left President Augustin Senghor of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) expressing his frustration at the outcome. “The players fought well, but there is inevitably some bitterness,” Senghor remarked, acknowledging the painful nature of the defeat.
With Egypt having won their match, Senegal’s path to qualification has become more difficult. Papiss Cissé, the team’s talismanic forward, acknowledged the tough reality, saying, “It’s very cruel to lose in this way, but even with a draw, we would have to go and fight in Egypt.” Senegal now faces a battle to secure their place at the tournament, but Cissé remains optimistic about the team’s chances.
“With the same state of mind in Egypt and with success, Senegal, which has two matches left, including one at home, will be within its reach to qualify,” Senghor added, trying to reassure both players and supporters. The FSF president also highlighted the collective effort shown by his players throughout the match. “This evening, in addition to not giving an inch of ground to their opponents, the players showed real collective qualities.”
Despite the crushing loss, Senghor called on his team to learn from the defeat and stay focused on the road ahead. “We must learn from such cruel defeats. Fortunately, Senegal has kept its chances intact,” he said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive mindset as they prepare for the crucial matches in Egypt.
With their fate still in their hands, Senegal will be hoping to bounce back with a strong performance in their remaining qualifiers to ensure their place in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
