Senegal pocket $10m as AFCON 2025 champions
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Senegal a record-breaking $10 million in prize money for winning the AFCON 2025 title.
The win came after their dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco on Sunday, January 18, 2026. This amount represents a 43% increase from the $7 million awarded to the winner of the previous edition in 2023.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe announced the increase ahead of the tournament’s kick-off in December 2025, as part of a strategy to boost African football’s global stature and financial viability.
The total prize pool for the tournament was estimated at around $32 million, ensuring that all 24 participating nations received financial rewards. 
The runners-up, Morocco, did not leave empty-handed; they were awarded $4 million.

AFCON 2025 Prize Money Breakdown

The prize money was distributed to teams based on their performance throughout the competition: 

  • Champion: $10 million
  • Runner-up: $4 million
  • Semi-finalists: $2.5 million each
  • Quarter-finalists: $1.3 million each
  • Round of 16: $800,000 each
  • Third place in group: $700,000 each
  • Fourth place in group: $500,000 each

The highly anticipated match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium ended 0-0 after 90 minutes, marked by immense tension and a controversial penalty incident in stoppage time.

Morocco was awarded a penalty after a lengthy VAR review, but Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy saved Brahim Díaz’s “Panenka” attempt, a moment that proved pivotal in denying Morocco a late winner.

The deadlock was finally broken just three minutes into extra time when Senegal’s Pape Gueye unleashed a fierce left-footed strike into the top corner. Morocco pushed desperately for an equalizer, even hitting the crossbar with a header from Nayef Aguerd, but Senegal’s defense held firm to secure their second consecutive title.
