SENEGAL: PAPISS CISSÉ NO LONGER WANTS THE ARMBAND

Papiss Cissé, the Newcastle striker and captain of the Senegal national team, expressed his disappointment and frustration with the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF). The issue arose after Cissé missed a call-up to the national team for a friendly match against Niger on November 14. Subsequently, the FSF contacted FIFA to prevent Cissé from playing for Newcastle against Swansea.

In an interview with the Senegalese daily Rewmi, Cissé conveyed his disappointment with the actions taken by the federation, stating, “I am really very disappointed with this reaction from the Senegalese football federation, with these sanctions against me and that of the club.” He emphasized his commitment to representing his country, having never missed a call-up, whether for friendly matches or official competitions.

Cissé, who was promoted to the captaincy of the Lions of Teranga during recent matches, expressed his agreement with Newcastle’s position on the matter. He also indicated that he is considering giving up the captain’s armband in light of the situation, citing his regret at the federation doubting his commitment and good faith. The controversy highlights the challenges sometimes faced by players caught between club and national team duties.
