Senegal’s budgetary process for 2013 concluded on Monday with the approval of a total budget of 2,732 billion FCFA by the 150 Senegalese deputies. However, the allocation for sports is notably minimal. The budget for the Ministry of Sports and Community Life stands at around 10 billion FCFA, representing less than 1% of the overall budget. This figure falls significantly short of the electoral promise made by the current President of Senegal, who aimed to increase the sports budget to 1%, compared to the 0.06% left by the previous regime of Me Abdoulaye Wade. Despite assurances of gradual increases, athletes are currently dealing with a stagnant budget. The Ministry of Sports had previously requested budgetary extensions due to challenges associated with expenses related to national football and basketball teams participating in various competitions.
