Senegal mourns US Ouakam captain Fadiouf Ndiaye after on-field collapse

Fadiouf Ndiaye

Fadiouf Ndiaye, captain and central defender of Union Sportive de Ouakam (USO), has died after collapsing during a Ligue 1 match against Oslo FA on Saturday.

The 24th matchday fixture, held at the Parcelles-Assainies stadium in Dakar, turned into a tragic scene when Ndiaye suffered a cardiac arrest shortly before half-time.

The experienced centre-back, who wore the number 20 shirt, was involved in a heavy collision just minutes before his collapse.

Emergency medical personnel rushed to provide immediate aid and attempted to transport him to hospital. However, Ndiaye passed away en route, despite all efforts to save him.

The shocking news was confirmed only after the final whistle of the match, which US Ouakam won 2–0.

The result, now overshadowed by the devastating loss, leaves a profound void in Senegalese football.

Ndiaye had long been a respected figure in the domestic league, both for his leadership qualities and his consistency at the heart of USO’s defence.

As captain, he played a pivotal role in guiding the Sharks to third place in the league standings and was widely admired for his commitment on and off the pitch.

His sudden passing has sent waves of grief through the footballing community in Senegal. Teammates, officials, and fans alike were left in shock as the events unfolded.

The club has yet to issue a formal statement, but players and coaching staff were seen visibly distraught at the end of the match.

Supporters gathered outside the stadium in silent vigil as word of Ndiaye’s death began to circulate.

Tributes have already begun pouring in across social media, with fellow footballers, clubs, and fans expressing condolences to Ndiaye’s family and to the entire US Ouakam community. Many described him as a “leader in every sense” and praised his dedication to the sport and his team.

This tragic incident is the latest in a series of heart-related emergencies in football, raising fresh concerns around player health and safety protocols within domestic competitions.

Questions are likely to be asked about the availability of life-saving equipment, medical readiness, and response times during matches at all levels of the game.

The Senegalese Football Federation is expected to open an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ndiaye’s collapse and the emergency response that followed.

For now, though, attention remains focused on honouring the memory of a player who gave everything to his club and country.

Fadiouf Ndiaye’s death marks a heartbreaking moment not only for US Ouakam but for Senegalese football as a whole.

His legacy as a committed captain, dependable defender, and passionate professional will be remembered by all who knew him and watched him play.

The remainder of the league season is likely to be held under a sombre cloud, with tributes expected at upcoming fixtures.

As the footballing world comes to terms with the loss, one thing remains certain—Fadiouf Ndiaye’s name will be etched in the hearts of Senegalese fans for years to come.
