Senegal defender Mouhamed El Bachir Ngom joins Gent on long-term deal
Mouhamed El Bachir Ngom has completed a move to Belgian side Gent, signing a long-term contract that will keep him at the club until 2031 after leaving Grasshopper Club Zurich.
The 26-year-old continues his steady rise in European football following another impressive spell, with Gent confirming his arrival from the Swiss club where he had been playing since February.
The Belgian outfit have moved quickly to secure the services of the centre-back, who has earned a reputation for consistency after successful periods in Latvia and Switzerland.
A product of Senegal’s renowned Diambars Institute, Ngom has signed a five-year contract with Gent, underlining the club’s confidence in his ability to strengthen their defensive options for the coming seasons.
His latest transfer comes after a brief but productive stay at Grasshopper Club Zurich.
During his time in Switzerland, the defender featured in 17 matches across all competitions and scored one goal before attracting interest from the Belgian side.
Although his spell at Grasshopper was relatively short, it followed several outstanding years in Latvia, where he established himself as one of the league’s most reliable defenders.
Ngom joined Riga FC in 2022 after leaving Auda FK and quickly became an important figure in the club’s back line.
Over three seasons with Riga, he made 119 appearances, scored five goals and provided 10 assists, contributing at both ends of the pitch.
His performances also helped Riga enjoy considerable domestic success.
During his time at the club, Ngom won both the Latvian Championship and the Latvian Cup, adding major honours to his growing career.
His individual displays did not go unnoticed either.
In 2025, he was recognised as the best defender in the Latvian league, an award that reflected his consistency and influence throughout the campaign.
That recognition further enhanced his reputation and paved the way for opportunities in stronger European competitions.
Now, the Senegalese defender takes another important step by joining Gent, where he will be expected to bring experience, leadership and defensive stability.
The long-term agreement until 2031 demonstrates the Belgian club’s commitment to the player and their belief in his future contribution.
After progressing from the Diambars Institute to successful spells in Latvia and Switzerland, Ngom now begins a new chapter in Belgium as he looks to continue his development and establish himself as a key player for Gent in the years ahead.
