Senegal midfielder Pape Sarr could miss the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after suffering an injury in Tottenham Hotspur’s game against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
The 21-year-old central midfielder got the opening goal for Tottenham after 32 minutes at home against Bournemouth but was later stretched off after picking up a knock.
Though the extent of the injury is undetermine, Sarr’s emotional reaction says a lot as he was in tears as he was being consoled by the captain Son Heung Min.
Sarr could be out for weeks if the injury is serious, which will rule him out of the tournament that is starting in a couple of weeks in Cote d’Ivoire.
However, Senegal in Group C will start their title defence on January 15 with against neighbouring Gambia, the second group game is on January 19 against former champions, Cameroon before wrapping up with a game against Guinea on January 24.
Teranga Lions head coach Aliou Cisse would now have to look for a replacement for Sarr to restructure his team ahead of the tournament.
