Mamadou Lamine Camara has taken his first steps with Senegal’s senior national team this month, marking a significant milestone in the young midfielder’s rising career.
The RS Berkane star was included in Pape Thiaw’s squad for the June FIFA international window, and following his initial training session, he expressed both gratitude and determination in his first public comments.
“Here, I found older brothers, managers who help us raise the level. We were well received, we are happy here,” Camara told the Senegalese Football Federation’s media after the session.
The 21-year-old arrives in camp fresh from a successful CAF Confederation Cup campaign with RS Berkane.
Despite his accomplishments at the club level, Camara remains acutely aware of the demands and intensity of international football, particularly within a squad rich in experience and talent.
“Competition exists everywhere in football, so I come here to learn from my elders. I’ve been through almost all the lower categories. It’s always been the same: come, learn as much as possible. I try to bring the minimum I have to try to stay,” he said, acknowledging the steep learning curve ahead while maintaining a humble perspective.
Camara’s call-up represents a natural progression in his footballing journey, having previously featured in Senegal’s youth sides.
His disciplined performances and composure in midfield have not gone unnoticed, prompting the senior team’s coaching staff to give him a chance to stake his claim.
While it is still early days, the midfielder is making the most of his opportunity by soaking in knowledge from his more seasoned teammates, many of whom have played pivotal roles in Senegal’s recent international successes, including their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations triumph.
With fixtures ahead, Camara will be eager to translate his training ground efforts into matchday contributions.
However, for now, he appears focused on integrating into the squad culture, respecting the pecking order, and proving his worth gradually—one session at a time.
In a national team known for its strong sense of unity and work ethic, Camara’s measured approach could serve him well as he bids to become a permanent fixture in the Lions of Teranga midfield.
