Senegal make emphatic start to UFOA-A U17 tournament with 4-0 win over Mauritania

Senegal began their UFOA-A U17 campaign in commanding fashion by beating Mauritania 4-0 at Stade Lat-Dior in Thies on Monday, 7 September 2026.

The result gives the host nation an ideal start in Group A of the continental tournament, with an emphatic attacking display putting them at the top of their pool after the opening round of matches.

Cheikh Oumar Sy was the outstanding figure for Senegal, scoring twice as the young side quickly established control of the contest. Souleymane Commissaire Faye and Amadou Ndiaye were also on target to complete a comprehensive victory for the hosts.

Senegal, known as the Lionceaux de la Teranga, took full advantage of playing on home soil. Their performance combined a potent attack with the collective organisation needed to prevent Mauritania from mounting a serious challenge.

The Mauritanian team, known as the Mourabitounes, struggled to find a response once Senegal had taken control. They were unable to match the hosts’ intensity or create enough of a threat to alter the course of the match.

For Senegal, the four-goal margin provides an important early boost as they look ahead to their next group fixture. The national technical staff can now prepare for Thursday’s second official match of the tournament, when the team will face Sierra Leone.

The opening-day win places Senegal in a strong position at the head of Group A. While the competition is still at an early stage, the hosts have made the clearest possible statement of intent with a decisive result and a performance built around the contribution of four different scorers.

The match in Thies was the only fixture played in the UFOA-A U17 tournament on Monday. Senegal therefore ended the day with three points and a substantial goal difference, while Mauritania must regroup before their next opportunity to compete in the group.
