Lamine Gassama Reflects on His Career and Senegal’s Ambitions

Lamine Gassama, the Senegalese right-back currently plying his trade at Lorient in Ligue 1, has been a steady performer for both his club and his national team. Since joining Senegal’s national squad in 2011, Gassama has enjoyed a fruitful career with the Lions of Teranga, contributing solid performances on the field and always carrying immense pride in representing his country.

The Heartfelt Decision to Play for Senegal

When speaking about his decision to play for Senegal, Gassama reflected on the significance of the national jersey. “For me, it was obvious because I still have family there. My parents were born there. It’s a jersey I’ve always wanted to wear,” he explained. The right-back admitted that when first approached by the Senegal Football Federation, he hesitated a bit, needing time to consider the offer. But eventually, in 2011, he made the decision to join the team, a move he is deeply proud of today.

“I was young, and I didn’t immediately jump at the chance when they first approached me. I told them I would come but that I needed a little more time,” he continued. “Until today, I’ve been lucky enough to be called up. It was the choice of the heart, and I’m very happy about it.”

Aiming for the Africa Cup of Nations Title

Having participated in Senegal’s last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, Gassama remains focused on helping his team secure their first-ever AFCON title. Despite Senegal often fielding strong teams with impressive players, Gassama is aware that they’ve struggled to secure the coveted cup. “I hope we win at least one CAN because it’s true that we often have great generations. But we have trouble lasting and winning competitions,” he said.

Gassama is hopeful for the future of the national team, and with the talent they have, he believes Senegal is on the cusp of something special. “So it would be good for Senegal to finally have this first cup. I hope the best is yet to come.”

Looking Forward to Future Success

As Lamine Gassama continues his successful career with Lorient, his sights are set firmly on Senegal’s next big challenges. With the leadership of Aliou Cissé at the helm, the team is building momentum, and Gassama is optimistic that the Lions of Teranga will achieve greatness in the future.

This ambition for victory reflects Gassama’s passion for representing his country and his unwavering commitment to seeing Senegal lift the Africa Cup of Nations trophy. The next chapter in Senegal’s footballing history may very well include Gassama’s pivotal contributions as they aim for glory.
