Senegal internationals headline a summer of major European transfer moves

Senegalese footballers were among the most prominent figures in the summer transfer market, with several players moving to leading European clubs in deals worth tens of millions of euros.

Iliman Ndiaye was involved in the biggest reported operation, with a €76m move to Manchester City announced during the window. The deal placed the Senegal international at the top of a series of high-value transfers involving players from the country.

Nicolas Jackson also secured a major move, joining Aston Villa for €55.5m. The transfer was one of two prominent deals involving Senegalese players and the Premier League club.

A proposed move for Lamine Camara to Chelsea, worth €55m, was cancelled in the final hours of the transfer window. Despite the agreement being expected to take place, the transfer did not go through before the market closed.

Ibrahim Mbaye did complete a €55m switch, moving from Paris Saint-Germain to Aston Villa. His arrival added another Senegalese player to the club’s summer recruitment and matched the reported value of the proposed deal for Camara.

El Hadji Malick Diouf joined West Ham in a deal worth €40.8m. The move further underlined the scale of investment in Senegalese talent during this year’s summer window, with several players changing clubs across Europe.

Pape Matar Sarr’s transfer took a different form. The midfielder left Tottenham to join Juventus on loan, providing another example of a Senegalese international changing destination during the market.

Taken together, the moves made Senegalese players a significant presence in the European transfer window. Several internationals joined high-profile clubs, while the value of the completed and announced operations reached tens of millions of euros.

The activity extended across clubs in England and Italy, with Manchester City, Aston Villa, West Ham and Chelsea all featuring in the deals involving Senegalese players. While Camara’s proposed move to Chelsea was ultimately cancelled, the completed transfers involving Ndiaye, Jackson, Mbaye and Diouf represented some of the market’s most substantial operations involving Senegalese footballers.

The summer window therefore saw Senegalese players play a central role in a number of major European transfers, with movement involving some of the continent’s leading clubs and a loan move to Juventus for Sarr.
