Senegal head coach Aliou Cisse has signed a contract extension with the Senegalese Football Federation, AfricaSoccer.com can confirm
The former captain took over the job in 2015 from Frenchman Alain Giresse, where he has done remarkably well.
Senegal returned to the World Cup in 2018 in Russia since their debut in 2002 under the tutelage of Cisse as he also took the Teranga Lions to 2019 AFCON finals where they lost narrowly to Algeria.
The Terranga Lions finally won the AFCON for the first time in their history in Cameroon 2021 where they defeated Egypt in penalties and went on to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after beating the same opponents in the playoffs.
Senegal failed to defend their title in Cote d’Ivoire as they lost to the host country in the Round of 16 after losing on penalties.
They won all the three group games and ended up as the best side after the group stages but unfortunately lost to the hosts after extra-time.
Initially, there were speculations that suggested Cisse would depart the top Senegal job after nine years as the man on the touchline.
However, the former captain has signed a new two-year deal to continue as the head of the technical team of the Senegal national team.
Cisse’s main target is to help Senegal qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be staged in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
