Senegalese football is grieving the loss of Saïd Fakhri, the former president of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) from 2003 to 2005, who passed away on Wednesday evening in Dakar at the age of 77. According to sources close to his family, Fakhri suffered a heart attack.
Fakhri’s tenure at the helm of the FSF came to an end following Senegal’s elimination from the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia. He was also known for his involvement in football beyond Senegal, serving as the owner of AS Cannes Football in France and holding a position as vice-president of the supervisory board of Olympique de Marseille (OM).
In January 2009, Fakhri acquired AS Cannes, with his son Ziad assuming the role of president. Despite his efforts, Fakhri was unable to fulfill his aspiration of guiding the club back to Ligue 1.
Recognized for his contributions, Fakhri was honored with the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit in Senegal, his birthplace.
Meanwhile, AS Cannes has made progress in the Coupe de France, securing a place in the quarter-finals after defeating Montpellier. The team is set to face Guingamp in the next round at the Pierre-de-Coubertin stadium on March 26.
Saïd Fakhri will be laid to rest on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at 3 p.m. at the Yoff Muslim cemetery in Dakar. The ATS Editorial team extends its heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.
