Senegal face risk of further CAF sanctions amid deepening AFCON dispute

Confederation of African Football could impose further sanctions on Senegal as tensions escalate over the disputed outcome of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

At the centre of the latest concern is Article 59 of CAF’s regulations, which bars any team deemed to have forfeited a match from participating in the next edition of the tournament.

The provision has come into sharp focus following CAF’s decision to award Morocco a 3-0 administrative victory over Senegal in the final, overturning the result on the pitch.

The ruling has already triggered strong reactions, but the potential consequences could extend far beyond the loss of the title. Should Senegal formally challenge the decision or refuse to comply with CAF directives, the federation risks additional disciplinary action, including possible exclusion from the next AFCON.

Such a sanction would represent a significant blow, not only to Senegal’s national team but also to African football more broadly, given the country’s status as one of the continent’s leading sides. The prospect of their absence raises concerns about the competitive balance and commercial appeal of the tournament.

The situation remains fluid, with Senegal expected to pursue legal options as it contests CAF’s decision. However, any escalation, including a boycott of official processes, could further complicate the case and expose the federation to stricter penalties.

CAF now faces a delicate balancing act between enforcing its regulations and managing the wider fallout.
