Diafra Sakho Returns to Senegal Squad After AFCON Absence
After a controversial withdrawal from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Diafra Sakho is officially back with Senegal’s national team. The West Ham striker has been recalled by head coach Aliou Cissé for the 2017 AFCON qualifier against Namibia, scheduled for September 4th.
Sakho, who has been absent from the Lions of Teranga since January, expressed his delight at rejoining the national setup and emphasized the importance of the dialogue he had with Cissé.
“I’m very happy to have been recalled to represent Senegal,” said Sakho. “I knew the national team wasn’t over for me. The coach made me understand a lot of things and I, as a player who wants to represent Senegal, understood that I had to return to defend the colors.”
The 25-year-old forward has already taken part in training sessions with the group and appears motivated ahead of the crucial away clash in Windhoek.
“We had good training sessions and we will do everything to try to win on Saturday,” he added.
Sakho’s return brings added firepower to a Senegalese attack already brimming with talent, as the team looks to maintain its perfect start in Group K of the qualifiers.
