Diafra Sakho Opens Up About AFCON 2015 Controversy and Injury Setback
Diafra Sakho, who is sidelined for four weeks due to injury, has been spending time in Dakar as he recovers. The Senegalese international sustained the injury during West Ham’s 1-1 draw with Stoke City on Matchday 32 of the Premier League. While away from action, Sakho reflected on a previous chapter of his career in an interview with L’Observateur, discussing his controversial absence from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The West Ham striker was initially called up by Senegal coach Alain Giresse for the tournament, but his club opposed the selection due to concerns over his fitness. Sakho admitted that he didn’t put up much resistance to the club’s decision, acknowledging that he could have fought harder for his inclusion if he had received more backing from the Senegalese Football Federation.
“I didn’t force the issue after the club’s decision,” Sakho explained. “But I could have done so if I had the support of the management. I can’t enter into a conflict with my club under these conditions.”
Sakho further explained that the situation could have been resolved more effectively if the Federation had been proactive. He revealed that when West Ham invited the Senegalese Football Federation to assess his injury in person, the offer was declined. Sakho pointed out that FIFA regulations allow for the national team doctor to visit a player’s club to assess their fitness, yet the Federation did not take up the offer.
“Why didn’t they want to come?” Sakho questioned, adding, “I don’t like to argue, and I have a lot of respect for the members of the Federation; they are my fathers and uncles, it’s true. I can understand their frustration. When you fail and everyone expects you to give up, the best way to hang on is to find someone to blame.”
Sakho’s comments shed light on the complexities and frustrations surrounding his decision not to participate in the 2015 AFCON, and his desire for better communication and support from both his club and the Federation. As he recovers from his current injury, the forward remains focused on regaining full fitness and continuing his career with West Ham and the Senegalese national team.
