Senegal defender Cheikhou Kouyaté set for Anderlecht reunion
Senegal defender Cheikhou Kouyaté is set for a remarkable return to Belgian powerhouse Anderlecht, a decade after his departure from the club.
According to reports, Anderlecht have opened discussions with the experienced Senegalese defender, who is currently a free agent following his departure from Amed SK.
Kouyaté, now 36, enjoyed a successful spell with Anderlecht between 2009 and 2014, establishing himself as a commanding presence in defence and a fan favourite during his time in Brussels. His leadership qualities and wealth of experience have now put him back on the club’s radar as they look to strengthen their ranks in an unconventional way.
However, the proposed move comes with a unique twist. Rather than rejoining the senior squad, Anderlecht are reportedly considering bringing Kouyaté in to feature for their reserve side, RSCA Futures. The plan is for the veteran to play a mentoring role while contributing on the pitch in the Challenger Pro League, helping to guide the club’s emerging talents.
Such a role would see Kouyaté combine his on-field responsibilities with leadership duties, offering invaluable experience to the next generation of players within the Anderlecht system.
Since leaving Amed SK in Turkey’s second division, Kouyaté has been without a club—a situation that could make the prospect of a return to familiar surroundings even more appealing.
While talks are still ongoing and no agreement has been finalized, the potential reunion presents an intriguing opportunity for both player and club: Anderlecht would gain a seasoned professional to nurture their youth setup, while Kouyaté could write a new chapter in a place where he once thrived.
