The government of Senegal has officially announced its intention to bid for the hosting rights of the 2032 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The announcement was made on Monday by Khady Diène Gaye during a session in parliament, signaling the country’s ambition to stage Africa’s biggest football tournament for the first time in four decades.

If successful, it would mark Senegal’s return as AFCON hosts since the 1992 edition, which remains the only time the West African nation has organized the continental championship.

The declaration comes at a time when Senegal continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.

The Teranga Lions have enjoyed sustained success in recent years, highlighted by their triumph at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and consistent appearances at the FIFA World Cup.

Senegal has also invested heavily in sports infrastructure in recent years, including the construction of the modern Stade Abdoulaye Wade, which has hosted major continental and international matches since its inauguration.

The country’s bid is expected to emphasize its growing infrastructure, football development, and experience in organizing international sporting events.

Senegal recently hosted matches at the 2023 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying stages and has increasingly become a destination for major CAF competitions.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has yet to open the formal bidding process for the 2032 tournament, but Senegal’s early declaration positions the country among the potential contenders for the hosting rights.

Hosting the competition would represent another major milestone for Senegalese football and an opportunity for the nation to showcase its sporting and cultural heritage on the continental stage.
