Only ten players remain from Senegal’s first AFCON triumph

The Senegalese Football Federation has confirmed that the Senegal national team will return to action in March with two international friendly matches as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Fresh from their triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations, the reigning African champions are set to resume competitive activity from France, marking their first appearance since edging hosts Morocco 1-0 in last month’s final.

After weeks of celebration, attention has now firmly shifted toward the global stage.

Senegal will begin their World Cup campaign on June 16 with a high-profile encounter against France at MetLife Stadium on the outskirts of New York City.

The Lions of Teranga have been drawn into Group Nine, which also features Norway, led by Erling Haaland, as well as a yet-to-be-determined qualifier from the continental play-off involving Bolivia, Suriname and Iraq.

As part of their build-up, the Senegalese FA revealed that the national team will face Peru on March 28 at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, before returning home to take on Gambia on March 31 at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio.

Senegalese media reports suggest that the preparation programme could be expanded with another friendly scheduled for May 31, potentially against the United States in Charlotte, as the African champions continue to fine-tune their squad ahead of the World Cup.
