World Cup 2026: Senegal collapse against Belgium revives scrutiny of Diouf’s pre-tournament remarks

One of the most talked-about statements before the 2026 FIFA World Cup has returned to the spotlight after Senegal’s painful elimination from the tournament in the Round of 32.

The Lions of Teranga exited the competition following a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Belgium, despite leading by two goals late in the match, bringing an abrupt end to hopes of another major World Cup run for one of Africa’s strongest sides.

Attention has now shifted back to comments made by Senegal defender El Hadji Malick Diouf before the tournament, when he declared that Senegal were targeting the World Cup title rather than simply matching Africa’s historic semi-final achievement.

High ambitions before the tournament

Speaking shortly after Senegal’s defeat to Morocco in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, Diouf made clear that the team’s ambitions stretched far beyond the last four.

” If the goal is just to reach the semi-finals, we might as well stay at home .”

He added, in statements to French broadcaster Canal+, “We are a great nation, and we go to the World Cup to win it. As for those who are content with the dream of the semi-finals, I apologise to them, because we are going to win the tournament.”

The remarks drew attention at the time because they appeared to reference Morocco’s historic 2022 World Cup campaign, when the Atlas Lions became the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals.

Belgium comeback ends Senegal hopes

Senegal’s campaign, however, ended long before reaching those heights.

The African side appeared to be heading into the Round of 16 after taking a 2-0 lead against Belgium and holding that advantage until the closing minutes of normal time.

But Belgium staged a remarkable comeback by scoring twice before the end of regulation time and then netting the winner during extra time to complete a stunning turnaround.

The defeat left Senegal out of the competition before even reaching the quarter-finals, prompting widespread discussion online about Diouf’s earlier comments.

Social media reaction grows

Following the elimination, many social media users revisited the defender’s pre-tournament remarks, with some describing the statement as overly confident in light of Senegal’s early exit.

Others shared the comments as one of the striking talking points of the 2026 World Cup, while several supporters called for greater humility ahead of future tournaments.

Despite the disappointment, Senegal remain one of Africa’s most respected football nations, though their latest World Cup campaign will now be remembered as much for its dramatic collapse against Belgium as for the ambitious words that preceded it.
