Senegal coach Souleymane Diallo confident despite suspension of midfielder Mbaye Yaya Ly

Senegal coach Souleymane Diallo confident despite suspension of midfielder Mbaye Yaya Ly

Senegal advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after a goalless draw with Sudan, but their progress came at a cost with the dismissal of influential midfielder Mbaye Yaya Ly.

The AS Pikine player was sent off late in the match after picking up a second yellow card, leaving Senegal to finish the encounter with ten men. His suspension means he will miss the quarter-final clash against Uganda, a fixture in which coach Souleymane Diallo had hoped to rely on his experience and versatility.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Diallo admitted the absence of Ly was a blow to his side, describing him as a key figure in both phases of the game.

“Mbaye Yaya Ly is indeed an important player in this team. He fulfils many roles, both defensively and offensively,” Diallo said. “Of course, losing him is not ideal, especially at this stage of the competition.”

Despite the setback, the coach insisted that Senegal have the resources within their squad to manage the loss. Diallo emphasised his confidence in the depth available to him, making clear that other players are prepared to step into the role if required.

“But there are players on the bench capable of replacing him effectively,” he continued. “He remains a very important player because of his defensive ability, but we must trust in the squad. Others will have the opportunity to show what they can bring.”

Senegal’s Path to the Last Eight

The 0-0 draw with Sudan, though lacking in goals, was enough to secure Senegal’s place in the knockout rounds. It was a contest characterised by defensive resilience rather than attacking flair, with both teams struggling to break down each other’s back lines.

For Senegal, the stalemate highlighted their organisation and discipline, qualities that have underpinned their campaign so far. Diallo’s side have built a reputation in the tournament for their compact shape and ability to grind out results, and the match against Sudan was another example of this approach.

The coach acknowledged the need to improve in attack but praised the determination shown by his players to hold firm under pressure. “We wanted more going forward, but the most important thing was to qualify,” Diallo remarked. “We must continue to build on this and approach the quarter-finals with confidence.”

Focus Shifts to Uganda

Attention now turns to the quarter-final meeting with Uganda, a side that has impressed during the group stage with a combination of energy and physicality. Diallo is aware of the challenge that lies ahead but remains optimistic despite the loss of Ly.

“Uganda are a good team and we respect them, but we will prepare well,” he said. “This competition is about adapting, and that is what we must do now.”

The absence of Ly forces Diallo to consider changes in midfield, with several squad members expected to compete for the vacant place. The coach has suggested that rotation may offer an opportunity for younger players to make their mark.

A Test of Squad Depth

The suspension of Ly is likely to test Senegal’s depth and resilience as they look to extend their run in the tournament. For Diallo, the situation is as much a test of leadership as it is of tactics. His response so far has been calm and measured, emphasising trust in the squad rather than dwelling on the loss of one individual.

As the quarter-finals approach, Senegal will rely on the collective strength of their squad to maintain momentum. For Diallo, the challenge is clear: adapt, adjust, and continue the pursuit of CHAN glory, even without one of his most reliable midfielders.
