The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened disciplinary proceedings against Senegal national team coach Pape Thiaw following the controversial events that unfolded during the AFCON 2025 final in Rabat.
Reports indicate that Thiaw could face a lengthy suspension, potentially preventing him from leading Senegal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
The incident occurred in stoppage time of the final between Senegal and Morocco when referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded a penalty to the hosts following a VAR review.
In protest, Thiaw instructed his players to leave the pitch and return to the locker room, resulting in a 17-minute delay before the match could resume. Morocco’s Brahim Diaz subsequently missed the penalty, and Senegal went on to secure a 1–0 victory in extra time.
CAF released a statement condemning the conduct: “CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour during matches, especially those targeting referees or match organisers.”
The governing body stressed that such actions are contrary to the spirit and values of football.
The disciplinary process involves a thorough review of all match footage, with the case to be referred to CAF’s disciplinary committees. Sanctions may include suspensions, fines, or bans for those found guilty of misconduct.
Despite Senegal’s historic triumph, the victory has been overshadowed by the walk-off and subsequent criticism. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also weighed in, condemning the “ugly scenes” and urging accountability from those involved.
