Senegal chase perfect finish as World Cup qualification nears final stage

Senegal will complete their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with decisive fixtures against South Sudan on 10 October and Mauritania on 14 October as they aim to secure a ticket to North America.

The Lions have delivered a strong campaign so far, playing eight matches without suffering a single defeat. Their impressive record includes five victories and three draws, leaving them firmly in control of Group B.

Senegal opened their qualifiers in dominant fashion, thrashing South Sudan 4-0 on matchday one. They followed up with a 2-0 victory over Togo and another 2-0 win against Sudan, showing their attacking strength and defensive discipline.

The team also claimed two crucial away victories. They beat Mauritania 1-0 on matchday four, with Habib Diallo scoring the decisive goal from a Pape Matar Sarr assist. Later, they edged DR Congo 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at the Stade des Martyrs.

Senegal’s three draws came in tightly contested matches. They were held 0-0 by Togo on matchday two and by Sudan on matchday five. They also shared the points with DR Congo in a 1-1 draw at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium on matchday three.

The Lions’ unbeaten run reflects their consistency and balance across all areas of the pitch. They have scored 13 goals during the campaign while conceding only three — all against DR Congo.

On the individual front, Pape Matar Sarr has emerged as Senegal’s standout performer. The midfielder leads the scoring charts with four goals, including a crucial strike against DR Congo created by Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly. Habib Diallo has played a key creative role, registering two assists — one for Sadio Mané in the opening match against South Sudan and another for Sarr against Mauritania.

With 18 points, Senegal sit at the top of Group B, two points clear of second-placed DR Congo, who have 16. The standings underline the significance of the final two fixtures, as victories in both will seal Senegal’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Coach Pape Thiaw’s squad aims to maintain their unbeaten run and finish the campaign in style. The players know that qualification remains within their control, and they intend to deliver strong performances to secure their spot on the global stage.

The clash with South Sudan offers an opportunity to build momentum before facing Mauritania in what could be a decisive final match. Both opponents will aim to disrupt Senegal’s rhythm, but the Lions’ recent form and experience make them favourites to progress.

Senegal’s defensive resilience, combined with their efficiency in attack, has been a defining feature of their campaign. The team has consistently managed games with composure, turning key moments in their favour when needed.

With qualification now within reach, the Lions remain focused on completing their mission. Two more positive results will not only guarantee a place at the 2026 World Cup but also reaffirm Senegal’s status as one of Africa’s elite footballing nations.
