SENEGAL CHAMPIONS TROPHY: AS PIKINE TAKES REVENGE AND LIFTS THE TITLE
AS Pikine added another trophy to their cabinet by clinching the Senegalese Champions Trophy this Sunday, overcoming Guédiawaye FC (GFC) in a tightly contested match at the Amadou Barry Stadium, the stronghold of their opponents. The match served as a rematch, with Pikine taking revenge on GFC, who had eliminated them two weeks earlier in the Parliament Tournament (1-0).
Already winners of the league and cup double last season, AS Pikine demonstrated why they are currently the team to beat in Senegalese football. With a host of new signings, including Nigerian, Beninese, and Cameroonian recruits, Pikine imposed their style of play early on and dominated the midfield.
The breakthrough came in the 30th minute, courtesy of Thierno Niang, who redeemed himself after missing a penalty earlier in the 15th minute. Despite numerous efforts, GFC couldn’t find a way back into the game.
In front of a large home crowd, Pikine’s disciplined display sent a strong message ahead of the upcoming season — they are determined to retain their league and cup titles. Their next challenge will be representing Senegal in the CAF Champions League.
The new Senegalese football season, initially set to begin on November 29, is now expected to kick off in early December.
