Fiorentina’s Babacar Khouma Ready to Compete for Senegal Spot
Fiorentina striker Babacar Khouma has earned his first call-up to the Senegal national team, as new head coach Aliou Cissé begins shaping his squad ahead of upcoming friendlies. The 21-year-old, who turns 22 soon, has enjoyed a strong season in Serie A, scoring seven goals in 19 appearances, and is widely seen as one of the league’s emerging talents.
Despite his rapid rise, Babacar is approaching his national team debut with humility and determination. Speaking to Le Populaire, the forward acknowledged the fierce competition in Senegal’s attacking ranks.
“I know the competition will be tough up front, but that won’t stop me from fighting,” he said. “I haven’t come to take anyone’s place — I just want to contribute.”
The striker is entering a team brimming with attacking depth, including the likes of Demba Ba (Besiktas), Mame Birame Diouf (Stoke City), and Moussa Konaté (FC Sion). Still, Babacar is hopeful of making his mark: “I hope to stay in the team.”
Senegal, under the guidance of Cissé, will play two friendly matches during the international break — against Ghana on Saturday, March 28, and a second fixture in Le Havre on Tuesday, March 31.
Babacar’s inclusion signals Cissé’s intent to blend established names with emerging talents as Senegal builds toward future international competitions.
