Senega: Pape Thiaw stands firm over Assane Diao’s AFCON inclusion despite Cesc Fabregas’ objections
Senegal coach Pape Bouna Thiaw has issued a firm response to Cesc Fabregas following the Como manager’s public opposition to Assane Diao’s call-up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Diao, who has not featured for Senegal since his debut in March 2025, is set to participate in the tournament in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, despite his recent injury setbacks.
Fabregas, speaking in multiple media appearances, expressed his desire for the 20-year-old forward to remain at Como, citing concerns over his fitness.
His comments intensified after Thiaw announced the 28-man squad, sparking widespread debate in Senegal.
In particular, Fabregas voiced frustration over what he perceived as unnecessary risks to the player’s health ahead of the tournament.
Thiaw addressed the controversy directly during an appearance on RTS’ “Yoony AFCON” program, clarifying Senegal’s stance.
“If he’s not happy, we, Senegal, are happy and proud, Thiaw said. Assane Diao is doing great things at Como, and I can understand why they want to keep him. Personally, I spoke with Fabregas. He tried to convince me not to call up Assane, but I defend the interests of my country above all else. I explained to him that we are completely professional and that we had to manage Assane as best we could. The player himself clearly expressed his determination to come. So the problem is resolved.
Diao’s path to the Africa Cup of Nations has been far from smooth.
After making his international debut in March 2025 during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Sudan and Togo, the young striker faced a series of setbacks.
A foot fracture in April 2025 prematurely ended his season, and subsequent injuries at the start of the 2025-2026 campaign delayed his return to full fitness.
Nevertheless, his determination to represent Senegal in Morocco remained unwavering, prompting Thiaw to maintain his selection despite Fabregas’ objections.
The Senegalese coach emphasized that Diao’s inclusion was a professional decision, balancing the player’s health with the national team’s needs.
Assane clearly wants to be part of this squad, Thiaw said. We will ensure he is managed carefully so he can contribute effectively. His commitment is unquestionable, and we must respect that.
Diao is expected to join the Lions of Teranga squad this week in preparation for the tournament, marking a significant step in his international career.
With tensions now publicly addressed, Senegal can focus on readying their squad for the opening stages of AFCON 2025.
