Sekou Sonko: Senegal forward joins Mardin 1969 from Petrojet on long-term deal

Senegal striker Sekou Sonko has joined Turkish side Mardin 1969 from Petrojet, signing a contract with the 1.Lig club until 30 June 2029.

The 20-year-old centre-forward moves to Turkiye after a breakthrough spell in Egypt, where he led the line for Petrojet in the Premier League and domestic cups. The deal, completed on 30 July 2026, sees Sonko commit to a three-year stay with the Mardin outfit as they strengthen their attacking options for the new campaign.

Sonko, who stands at 1.78m and plays predominantly through the middle, arrives on the back of eye-catching numbers in Egyptian football. He scored three goals and provided two assists in 14 Premier League appearances last season, while also impressing in cup competitions with six goals in seven Egyptian League Cup games and another in the Egypt Cup.

Right-footed and operating mainly as a central striker, Sonko first linked up with Petrojet in August 2025 and quickly established himself at senior level. He also featured in nine relegation play-off matches in Egypt, underlining his experience in high-pressure fixtures despite his age.

Born on 16 July 2006, Sonko’s current market value is listed at €350,000, reflecting his rapid progress since stepping into top-flight football.

Sonko’s switch from Petrojet to Mardin 1969 is now complete, with his contract in Turkiye running through to the summer of 2029.
