Manchester United send Malian midfielder Sékou Koné back to Lausanne-Sport on season-long loan
Manchester United have confirmed that Malian midfielder Sékou Koné will return to Swiss side Lausanne-Sport on loan, with the 20-year-old set to remain at the club until the end of the season.
The move marks Koné’s second spell with Lausanne-Sport after he spent part of last season on loan with the Swiss club.
United believe another campaign in the Swiss top flight will provide the young midfielder with further opportunities to gain valuable first-team experience.
Koné joined Manchester United in the summer of 2024 but is still waiting to make his senior competitive debut for the Premier League club.
Since arriving in England, the Mali international has continued his development away from Old Trafford, with regular playing time considered an important part of his progression.
His first loan spell at Lausanne-Sport gave him an initial taste of senior football in Switzerland.
Although his appearances were limited, the midfielder featured in five league matches, including one start, allowing him to adapt to the demands of top-flight football.
Manchester United have now opted to send him back to the same club, signalling confidence that Lausanne-Sport remains the right environment for his continued development.
Koné returns for a second spell
The Swiss club has once again secured the services of the young midfielder on a temporary deal, ensuring he will be available throughout the upcoming campaign.
Having already become familiar with the club’s environment, teammates and style of play during his previous stay, Koné returns with the advantage of knowing what is expected of him.
Lausanne-Sport will also benefit from bringing back a player who already understands the club’s system and can continue building on the experience gained during his first loan.
The move allows the Swiss side to strengthen its midfield options as preparations continue for the new season and the competitions ahead.
Still waiting for a Manchester United debut
Koné remains one of Manchester United’s young prospects despite not yet making a first-team appearance.
After completing his move to Old Trafford in 2024, the midfielder has continued his development through loan opportunities rather than immediate involvement with the senior squad.
The decision to arrange another temporary move reflects the club’s commitment to ensuring he receives competitive minutes before challenging for a place in Manchester United’s first team.
His performances in Switzerland during the coming months could play an important role in determining his next step once the loan concludes.
Opportunity for regular football
For Koné, the return to Lausanne-Sport offers another chance to establish himself with consistent performances in the Swiss league.
His previous spell brought five league appearances, with one coming in the starting lineup, providing a foundation on which he can now build.
The midfielder will aim to increase his playing time and continue his development throughout the season while helping Lausanne-Sport strengthen its squad.
Manchester United, meanwhile, will closely monitor his progress as he continues gaining valuable experience away from Old Trafford.
