Seko Fofana retires from international football at 31 after Ivory Coast triumph

Seko Fofana has announced his retirement from international football with Cote d’Ivoire at the age of 31, ending a career with the Elephants that brought 34 caps, seven goals and victory at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The midfielder was part of the Cote d’Ivoire side that won Africa’s most prestigious international competition. In a message to the Ivorian people, Fofana said representing his country had been a source of pride and gratitude.

“This is the right moment for me to turn the page. It is with pride and great gratitude that I was given the chance to fight for my country.

“Winning the continent’s greatest trophy was a childhood dream that came true for me, and it will be a memory engraved forever for millions of Ivorians.

“Thank you to my team-mates, the staff and all of you for your strength and support. I will always remain the Elephants’ number one supporter, and I cannot wait to see this new generation write its own history. There is no shortage of talent among us.”

Fofana therefore leaves the national team as an African champion, with a significant international career and lasting memories of representing Cote d’Ivoire.
