Sekhukhune United chase defender Athenkosi Mcaba

South African Premiership side Sekhukhune United FC are reportedly interested in signing former Stellenbosch FC defender Athenkosi Mcaba as they continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

The 24-year-old centre-back recently became available on the transfer market after parting ways with Stellenbosch following the expiration of his contract. His departure comes amid changes at the Cape Winelands club, where head coach Gavin Hunt has reportedly begun reshaping the squad after signing a contract extension.

According to reports, Hunt is keen to build a team suited to his long-term vision, with Mcaba among the players deemed surplus to requirements as the club prepares for the upcoming campaign.

Sekhukhune United, popularly known as Babina Noko, have now emerged as one of the clubs interested in securing the services of the former South African youth international.

Mcaba leaves Stellenbosch after five years of service, during which he established himself as a dependable member of the squad. He made 72 appearances for the club across all competitions and played a role in some of the most successful periods in the team’s history.

Among his achievements was helping Stellenbosch lift the Carling Knockout Cup, while he also featured prominently during the club’s impressive run to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2024/25 season.

His experience at both domestic and continental level is believed to be one of the key reasons behind Sekhukhune’s interest, with the club seeking defensive reinforcements capable of adding quality and depth to the squad.

The move would offer Mcaba an opportunity to revive his career and secure regular first-team football following his exit from Stellenbosch. For Sekhukhune, the potential signing represents a chance to add a proven Betway Premiership performer with valuable experience despite his relatively young age.

While no official agreement has been announced, discussions are expected to continue as Sekhukhune weigh up a move for the defender before the start of the new season.

Should the deal materialise, Mcaba would become one of the club’s notable additions as Babina Noko look to build a squad capable of competing strongly in domestic competitions during the 2026/27 campaign.
