Sekhukhune United part ways with coach Eric Tinkler after poor run
South African outfit Sekhukhune United have officially confirmed the departure of head coach Eric Tinkler, after a string of unimpressive results.
Tinkler leaves the club by mutual consent, bringing an end to his 13-month spell in charge of the club.
Uncertainty had surrounded the coach’s future after he was absent from the dugout during Sekhukhune’s 3-1 defeat to Stellenbosch FC—their first match without him. The club has now confirmed that the decision had already been made behind the scenes, following a difficult run of results.
Tinkler’s exit comes after a series of underwhelming performances that derailed Sekhukhune’s ambitions for the season. Club management had set a clear target of finishing in the top three, but with results failing to improve, that objective increasingly slipped out of reach.
In an official statement, the club expressed gratitude for Tinkler’s contribution despite the disappointing end to his tenure.
“Sekhukhune United Football Club confirms that it has reached a mutual agreement with Head Coach, Mr Eric Tinkler, to part ways with immediate effect,” the statement read.
“Mr Tinkler departs the Babina Noko family after 13 months in charge, during which he contributed to the club’s ongoing development and competitive progress. The club expresses its sincere appreciation for his professionalism and commitment during his tenure.”
With the coaching position now vacant, Paulus Masehe has been appointed as interim head coach. He will oversee the team’s affairs until a permanent replacement is named, as the club looks to stabilize its campaign and salvage a positive finish.
Masehe has already taken charge of the team once and faces another immediate test, with Sekhukhune set to take on Marumo Gallants FC at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium. The fixture marks his second game at the helm and an early opportunity to steady the ship.
Tinkler’s departure signals a reset for Sekhukhune United, who must now regroup quickly under new leadership. While his tenure showed glimpses of progress, the inability to meet key targets ultimately led to a parting of ways.
As the season enters a crucial phase, all eyes will be on how the team responds to the change—and whether Masehe can spark an upturn in fortunes in the short term.
