Sekhukhune United consider Cedric Kaze future after three defeats by Orlando Pirates

Sekhukhune United are considering Cedric Kaze’s position after the club suffered three consecutive defeats by Orlando Pirates, with some members of the management believed to have lost faith in the head coach.

Kaze could be dismissed before Sekhukhune United’s next match against TS Galaxy on Saturday, 5 September. The club must now decide whether to make a change this week, with assistant coach Papi Zothwane a possible interim replacement alongside Paulos Masehe.

The Burundi international was appointed head coach in early July, with Zothwane and Masehe joining his coaching staff. Kaze arrived at the club having previously worked as an assistant coach and co-coach at Kaizer Chiefs.

His tenure began positively during pre-season, when he guided Babina Noko to victory in the 2026 Mafori Cup. The tournament included Venda FC, Polokwane City and Magesi FC, and the success raised expectations ahead of the new campaign.

Sekhukhune United carried that momentum into their opening league fixture, beating Durban City 1-0. They then reached the MTN8 semi-finals after a dramatic 4-3 victory over AmaZulu FC.

That match was an early warning sign, despite the result. Babina Noko had led 3-1 before AmaZulu FC fought back to make it 3-3. Sekhukhune United eventually secured the win in extra-time, but their inability to protect a two-goal advantage highlighted some of the concerns that have since emerged.

The team’s form has been inconsistent since then. A 2-0 defeat by Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership was followed by a 2-0 victory against local rivals Polokwane City.

However, the three losses to Orlando Pirates in the space of a week have placed Kaze’s position under serious pressure. According to iDiski Times, uncertainty over his future has increased because some people within the club’s management no longer believe he is the right coach to lead the side.

Should Sekhukhune United decide to release Kaze, Zothwane is expected to take temporary charge, working with Masehe until a further decision is made.

The potential change comes only two months after Kaze’s appointment and follows a start that has combined early cup success with increasingly worrying league and head-to-head results.
