Alexandre Santos has admitted that finishing as runners-up in the CAF Champions League is not enough for AS FAR despite praising his players for their spirited performances against Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.

Santos Reflects on Painful Final Defeat

AS FAR fell to a narrow 2-1 aggregate defeat against Sundowns in the continental final in Rabat, missing out on the opportunity to secure a second African crown.

Speaking after the match, Santos acknowledged the disappointment felt by both the club and its supporters despite the team’s strong campaign.

“We are the second-best team this season in the Champions League. Of course, it is not enough for us and our fans, but I think we did very well against a very strong team,” said Santos.

“We Created a Lot of Opportunities”

The Portuguese tactician praised his players for their resilience and determination across both legs of the final, insisting his side pushed Sundowns all the way.

“We pushed them and created a lot of opportunities. Unfortunately, we conceded a goal, but we remained in character and tried to score. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be.”

AS FAR earned admiration throughout the tournament for their disciplined displays and fighting spirit, especially during the closely contested final against the South African champions.

Santos Congratulates Sundowns

Despite the heartbreak, Santos congratulated Mamelodi Sundowns on their achievement while highlighting the competitive level his team showed during the campaign.

“Unlucky for the club and congratulations to Sundowns. They showed they are a good team, but we also stood our ground in a strong competition like the Champions League,” he added.

Pride Despite Disappointment

Although the defeat denied AS FAR continental glory, the club’s run to the final remains one of their strongest CAF Champions League campaigns in recent years and has restored belief that they can challenge again at the highest level of African club football.
