Sebastien Migné has found a new coaching role after more than a year without a contract following his departure from Kenya after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. On Thursday, the French manager was officially appointed as the new head coach of Equatorial Guinea’s national team, the Nzalang Nacional.
Migné will succeed Spaniard Dani Guindos in the role, taking over the reins this October. This appointment marks his third experience as a national team head coach, following previous stints in Congo and Kenya. In addition, he has worked as an assistant coach in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Togo under the guidance of legendary French manager Claude Le Roy, gaining extensive experience in African football.
The new challenge comes with little time to spare, as Migné must quickly begin preparations for Equatorial Guinea’s upcoming fixtures in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Nzalang will face Tanzania and Tunisia in crucial matches that could determine their standing in the group, making Migné’s early influence on the squad essential.
In recent weeks, there had been speculation that Dutch football legend Clarence Seedorf was close to taking over the Equatorial Guinea job. However, the appointment of Migné puts an end to that uncertainty, entrusting the team’s future to a coach familiar with African football and its competitive demands.
With his experience and knowledge of the continent’s football landscape, Sebastien Migné now faces the challenge of guiding Equatorial Guinea through a critical qualifying period and aiming to establish the Nzalang as a competitive force in the 2021 AFCON campaign.
